The Language Functions in the Retextualization Process:

A Study based on Emoji Dick, or the Whale.

Resumo: Moby Dick é um romance norte americano bastante conhecido. Assim como outras obras famosas, a história da grande baleia branca foi recontada em diversas oportunidades, nos mais variados gêneros. Em 2010, foi publicado um livro chamado Emoji Dick, or The Whale, por Fred Benenson. Essa obra foi o primeiro romance escrito em emojis aceito pela Biblioteca do Congresso, a mais antiga dos Estados Unidos. Tomando Emoji Dick como objeto de estudo, esta pesquisa analisa os emojis como ferramentas da comunicabilidade humana. Embora o objetivo central deste artigo seja identificar quais são as funções de linguagem predominantes no processo de retextualização que acontece em Emoji Dick, este trabalho acaba por explorar também o papel que os signos imagéticos em questão detêm enquanto recurso linguístico de maneira geral. O referencial teórico que fundamentou esta pesquisa partiu, principalmente, dos estudos voltados para as funções de linguagem propostas por Jakobson (1979) e discutidas por Chalhub (1997), e dos processos de retextualização oferecidos por Marcuschi (2001). Este estudo pretende, assim, investigar e desvendar até que ponto os emojis funcionam como instrumentos de diálogo eficazes no tocante à comunicação humana.

Abstract: Moby Dick is a well-known American novel. As well as other famous works, the story of the great white whale has been retold in different occasions, in a wide variety of genres. In 2010, a book called Emoji Dick, or The Whale was published by Fred Benenson. The retextualization was the first novel translated into emojis accepted by the Library of Congress, the oldest of the US. Taking Emoji Dick as an object of study, this research analyzes emojis as human communicability tools. Although the main objective of this article is to identify which functions of language are prevailing in the retextualization process that happens in Emoji Dick, this work eventually explores the role that the image signs at issue hold as a linguistic resource in general. The theoretical background that is the basis of this research was mainly taken from studies focused on the functions of language proposed by Jakobson (1979) and discussed by Chalhub (1997), and the retextualization process offered by Marcuschi (2001). Therefore, this study aims to investigate and unravel to what extent emojis act as effective dialogue instruments to the human communication.
